What is a spoiler?
A "spoiler" is any piece of information that would "spoil" the experience of finding the tidbit out on your own. Non MUD-related examples include giving away the ending to a book or movie or sharing the secret code to unlock a puzzle in a game. Examples of "spoiler" information on SneezyMUD would be telling a player where their next discipline trainer is instead of deciphering the clues provided, giving step-by-step instructions to a quest or revealing specific item stat information.
Why do we need to hide spoilers?
Some players want to have the full experience of playing the game, including solving all challenges on their own, without having the ending given away. While we want to provide adequate information to players to assist them in their journey, we do not want to take the joy of discovery away from them. Providing adequate warning to these players allows everyone to make their own decisions regarding their exposure to spoiler information.
What specific information is considered a spoiler?
Spoiler information may include:
- Specific stats on items
- Exact locations of trainers
- Detailed descriptions of or step by step instructions to quests
- Any results obtained by the Mystic Man or the identify / divination spells
- Instructions on opening secret entrances in zones
- Detailed maps of the World or specific zones
- Speedwalk paths
How to hide a spoiler
To indicate your article contains potential spoilers, you must include the spoiler template at the top of your article. Adding the spoiler template is called transclusion and you can read how to use it here. Or, copy and paste this basic syntax and modify it to specify what spoilers are in your article:
{{Spoiler Warning | comment=Explain; (i.e., This page contains specific item stat information)}}
The above text in your article will produce this tag:
| This page contains possible spoilers: Explain; (i.e., This page contains specific item stat information) |
How to avoid spoilers
The above spoiler warning template must be applied to the top of any spoiler article. If you see that tag, either close the window or navigate back in your browser and do not read the text.
